The State government, through the Zacatecas Commission on Science, Technology, and Innovation (Cozcyt), hosts the workshop “Investigation and Development in Compatible Mining” with representatives from Arizona, United States, as stated in a release.
Gema Mercado Sánchez, Director of Cozyct stated that the objective of the workshop is to create a community in favor of the development of compatible mining in Zacatecas, along with the Clúster Minero (Clusmin) and three other related educational institutions.
Compatible Mining is a concept developed by the Lowell Institute for Mineral Resources of the University of Arizona – said Mercado Sánchez – and covers its development under a comprehensive perspective.
Mary Poulton, director of the Lowell Institute for Mineral Resources, said that the Institute was created in 2009 and brings together 26 disciplines related to mining and more than 40 partners, including international universities.
The Institute also integrates basic and applied research and education in the fields of science, humanities, engineering, health, business, leadership, and work rights with new ideas that have been adopted by leaders for the development of public politics and technology.
The workshop is the second approach with the University of Arizona and its Science Park, since in mid-November there was a visit to Arizona with the objective of identifying similarities with the state of Zacatecas.
Arizona and Zacatecas – expressed the official from Zacatecas- are mining states located in the desert facing similar obstacles, such as the ease of being headquarters for several mining companies, which causes both states to have similar obstacles and interests.
She explained that the objective is to create a center like the Lowell Institute in the first phase of the Science and Technology Park of Zacatecas and have a direct link with them for scientific development in the state mining sector.
It is projected that the center in Zacatecas is composed of the Autonomous University of Zacatecas, through the Academic Units of Mines, the Technologic University (Utzac), and the Interdisciplinary Professional Unit of Engineering of the local IPN.
The participants from Arizona are: Jose Lever, from the vice-presidency of Mexico - US Affairs office of the University of Arizona, Mary Poulton, Institute director, and Justin Dutram, director of business development for the Technology Park.
Attendees: Jesus Ramirez, Technical secretary of the commission on Science and Technology of the Senate, Alberto Mendoza, director of Clusmin, Exequiel Rolon, from Fresnillo PLC, and Christopher Avila, director of Government Relations of Grupo Bal.
